Art

Be inspired by your imagination and release your creativity by attending art classes at the Garden. Classes are intended to foster your artistic visions and give you the skills to bring them to life. Each class is designed to be hands-on with individualized instruction. The Garden offers programs in mosaic, gourd art, drawing and painting, and jewelry making.

All art class materials are included with attendance unless otherwise noted. We suggest that you bring your own snacks or lunch.


Ammonite Gourd Vessel

The ammonite, a fossilized sea squid from Madagascar, makes a wonderful focal point when integrated into the body of a canteen gourd. Color and dye the gourd and then stipple during this session. There will be an option to color stippled areas with a variety of different products. The latter portion of the day will be spent lashing the pygmy date palm onto the gourd.  All supplies furnished. The simple geometry of most cacti makes them excellent subjects for mastering shadow and texture in gouache. And with colorful, highly pigmented petals, they lend themselves to endlessly interesting compositions. Spend three days with watercolor artist Lynn Reves as you explore techniques like wet-on-wet and dry brush methods to create exquisite cacti paintings.

This striking vessel features sea grass and straight and twisted copper strips. Students will color and seal the gourd and then learn three weaving techniques: twining, coiling and couching.
