Sculpted Lizard Gourds

Build on your childhood skills of rolling snakes out of clay, using air-dried clay to sculpt a lizard on a gourd. Apply a finish to your gourd surface, then add a design and paint your lizard. The Art of Stippling

A form of shading, stippling uses small dots in various patterns and densities to establish texture and light gradients in a drawing. Scaly, spiny, spiky, thorny, smooth or layered-texture abounds in desert life! Explore the textures of desert plants and animals by creating 5x5-inch abstract reliefs in embossed copper and aluminum foil repoussé, French for "relief by hammering on the reverse side." Apply a black finish to the relief and wipe away for a beautifully textured creation. Participants can create their images by taking photographs, drawing directly from nature, or using images provided by the instructor. All materials included with class attendance. Learn a contemporary design that features negative space cutouts, fretwork, rustic stippling and couched bear grass to create a surface texture. Students ink and seal the gourd, drill holes, stipple the textured areas and then file the holes and the cutouts. Let yours soar as you read and discuss famous nature-based poems and discover key elements of effective writing. Then jot down observations while exploring the Garden, and return to the classroom to draft and, if you wish, share an original nature-based poem. Leading the class are the award-winning and widely published poets Cynthia Schwartzberg Edlow, M.A., and Johnnie Clemens May, M.A., M.F.A., who have a combined experience of 50 years teaching creative writing.
