Be inspired by your imagination and release your creativity by attending art classes at the Garden. Classes are intended to foster your artistic visions and give you the skills to bring them to life. Each class is designed to be hands-on with individualized instruction. The Garden offers programs in mosaic, gourd art, drawing and painting, bonsai, and jewelry making.

Gail Aubel guides students through peaceful patterns and demonstrates techniques for applying them successfully to the gourd's shape. Botanical Illustration: Boojum and Relatives

Among the plant forms and shapes in the Garden's collection, members of the ocotillo family offer some of the most eclectic subjects for training with watercolor paints and pencils, and pen and ink. Botanical illustrator Katherine Calllingham guides you from start to finish as you create accurate botanical illustrations of boojum trees and close relatives. Through a variety of exercises and outdoor sessions, you will develop your own style and skills to become a botanical artist. Explore the art of poster design, starting by looking at the rich history of posters, and discussing what makes a poster eye-catching and memorable. Then create your own posters, drawing on cactus and succulents from the Garden for inspiration. Practice composition, color palettes and hand-lettering techniques in a thumbnail sketch, then trace it onto a frame-worthy illustration board with pen, ink and gouache. All materials included. Coiled Agate Basket

Spend two days with Sue Brogdon learning how to weave a coiled basket. This pine needle coiled basket features a Brazilian agate and beads. You will be weaving with longleaf pine needles and wire. Seal the completed basket with a beeswax-paraffin sealant, and then learn to encase agates and other minerals in resin. All materials included. Limit 15.

CANCELLATION POLICY

Program registration may be canceled up to two weeks prior to the start date for a $20 processing fee. If you are unable to attend a class/workshop, you may transfer your registration to an alternate participant with your confirmation. Desert Botanical Garden reserves the right to cancel programs at its discretion. Programs will run as scheduled, regardless of weather, unless participants are contacted directly by Garden staff either by phone or email.
