Contemporary Gourd Canteen

Learn a contemporary design that features negative space cutouts, fretwork, rustic stippling and couched bear grass to create a surface texture. Students ink and seal the gourd, drill holes, stipple the textured areas and then file the holes and the cutouts. Let yours soar as you read and discuss famous nature-based poems and discover key elements of effective writing. Leading the class are the award-winning and widely published poets Cynthia Schwartzberg Edlow, M.A., and Johnnie Clemens May, M.A., M.F.A., who have a combined experience of 50 years teaching creative writing. The date palm's fruit can be lashed onto the rim of a gourd, added as a couching detail to the body of a gourd, or woven through a cut out portion to create a basket weave pattern.
