The Garden offers fun and life-enriching experiences for adults. Get in touch with nature and the desert through photography, culinary, wellness and landscaping experiences. Dig in to classes onsite at the Garden and new this season at off-site venues throughout the Valley.
Gain skills and confidence to get the job done in all aspects of desert landscaping, plus earn a credential after you successfully complete all the certificate programs.
Families engage in hands-on, nature-based experiences in a fun and safe environment, and teachers can participate in professional development opportunities.
Landscape and Gardening
Whether you are new to gardening or want to increase your knowledge, the Garden provides classes that will give you the necessary skills to become a successful low-desert gardener. Landscape and gardening programs cover an array of topics including vegetable gardening, pruning, desert plants, container gardening, sustainable practices and landscape design. Many of the classes are supported with hands-on investigative learning and taught by professionals in the field. Please note, some classes may take place outside Desert Botanical Garden at an off-site location. Be sure to verify class location in the class description before purchasing.

In this class, learn the uses of different types of organic seeds and the difference between heirloom and hybrid seeds. Learn about seed collection, propagation and germination to get you ready for fall vegetable planting. All materials included, no experience necessary, please bring gardening gloves. Get your hands dirty and learn how to grow healthy, organic fall vegetables. Learn soil preparation, companion planting and when to plant. In this hands-on class, explore the basics of vegetable gardening in low desert climates, including new varieties you may never have heard of and how to grow them yourself from seed. Perfect for beginners, but all levels welcome. This class is outdoors; please dress appropriately for the weather, bring garden gloves and water. Instructed by horticulturist, Carol Stuttard. Cooking and Wellness
Join our entertaining demonstration classes to explore new cuisines, cooking techniques or how to sharpen your culinary skills in a relaxed environment. No matter your culinary passion, we offer a wide variety of classes that will suit your lifestyle. From beginner cooking 101 classes, baking or international cuisines, experience a truly unique culinary event with family and friends. The Garden also offers wellness programs including meditation and tai chi held outdoors in stunning Garden settings. Classes are kept small and suitable for all levels of experience. Tamales exemplify the culture, travel and tradition that shape modern Mexican cuisine. Originating as early as 8,000 to 5,000 B.C, indigenous communities used the tamale, or tamalli, as an easy meal while traveling from region to region. To this day, the tamale is a seasonal dish that brings back memories of childhood, family gatherings and winter in the Southwest. Learn how to prepare delicious masa, meats and the delightful sauces with Maria Parra Cano from Sana Sana Foods. Class will be held outdoors, please dress comfortably.

The Sonoran Desert has sustained Native people for centuries, who continue to grow and cultivate wild species on their respective reservation lands to this day. Learn how indigenous ingredients such as mesquite flour, Pima Club wheat berries and tepary beans can be transformed into delicious recipes. Experience this special fall tasting with Brandy Button from Ramona Farms as she creates a seasonal soup and dessert; vegan or vegetarian option can be accommodated. The class includes a cooking demonstration and food tasting, as well as a unique gallery tour of the Phoenix Indian School Visitor Center. Transportation to the class location is not provided.
